Synopsis

This up-to-date collection of documents, essential for understanding the evolution of the conflict and efforts to resolve it, avoids presenting one perspective or another. A brief introductory essay, chronology of major events and developments, short introductions with the more than 100 documents arranged chronologically, selected bibliography, and index make this short historical record an easy-to-use research tool for broad interdisciplinary text use and for reference in college, university, institutional, and public libraries.

Excerpt

The Arab-Israeli conflict has been a notable element of the international relations of the Middle East for more than a century. Its evolution has been the subject of substantial attention and has generated numerous official and semi‐ official documents and a voluminous descriptive and analytical literature, both popular and academic. Many of the documents central to an understanding of the conflict have been published in collections that have appeared over the years, but these often have been focused on a particular theme or have been designed to substantiate a particular case or to present the arguments for a special perspective. Also, there have been official collections produced by parties to the conflict (or their advocates). Some volumes have contained the essays, articles or viewpoints of observers and analysts, again often seeking to provide a "perspective." In all instances these collections are useful for background but are not up‐ to-date and do not reflect the substantial movement and progress on this conflict of recent years.

This volume seeks to avoid the presentation of one perspective or another but includes those documents deemed essential to understand the evolution of the conflict and the progress toward its resolution. It is also up-to-date -- while it includes the central documents of the past 100 years, it focuses on those of the past few years that bring the story to the present, including the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty of 1994. It concentrates on the diplomatic-political history and evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It presents the texts (in whole or in excerpt) central to the evolution of the conflict and to the efforts to resolve the competing claims to Palestine as well as to the broader Arab-Israeli conflict.

Documents were selected based on their significance to the ongoing conflict and to the peace process. Thus, they provide both a historical record and elements involved in a resolution of the problem. References in the bibliography and the text will point the reader to other materials that may be of further interest.
