The list of the books in the Exhibition, together with the text of the labels that accompanied them, requires a short preface. The compilers are well aware that the Exhibition may not, perhaps, have been as complete as one might have wished it to be. For one reason or another, the task of selecting the books, requesting the loans, preparing the labels and arranging the exhibit had to be accomplished within the short space of a month. At the last minute, it was learned with dismay that some peculiarly significant items could not be obtained either because of institutional restrictions or due to the understandable reluctance of some collectors to part with their treasures. The heavy cost of insurance which the Club was obliged to assume also suggested that, in the interest of economy, the choice of a less spectacular copy than might have been shown or of an edition later than the editio princeps was sometimes indicated. If a few remarkably fine books known to be in this country were not included in this Exhibition, the reader is invited to draw his own conclusions.
