For forty years, rock and roll music has dominated American popular culture. a powerful force in contemporary society, rock music is a multi-billion dollar industry. Scholars have studied the sociological, psychological, and political impact of rock music on such diverse aspects of modern culture as censorship, violence, performing arts, fashion, literature, women's issues, diversity, and ethnomusicology. Commanding the attention of researchers in numerous fields of study, rock music scholarship is an interdisciplinary phenomenon that saturates both the humanities and the social sciences.

Scholarship is defined here as any work that provides a serious treatment of the subject with the intent to inform, enlighten, educate, or add to the body of knowledge on rock music. a subtle difference exists between rock music scholarship and rock music criticism. I've ignored this subtlety on occasion while making selections for inclusion in this work. However, readers will find that most items are primarily interpretive and analytical, rather than merely descriptive or just factual. This, then, excludes most news publications which report on current events but do not attempt to provide analysis (e.g., Time, Newsweek, People), popular or mass market biographies and histories, fanzines (e.g., Rolling Stone, Spin, Creem, Musician), popular fiction, record reviews, and juvenile works. There are exceptions when a piece serves to illuminate scholarly discourse. This is particularly true for selected trade journals that are important to a discipline's scholarly communication process (e.g., the fields of education and music). Finally, scholars should note that published interviews are excluded due to space limitations, but they are a tremendous source for oral histories.

Chapters in this work are organized into subject disciplines. Journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations, and films and videos are included when appropriate. Each entry includes bibliographic information applicable to the physical format. Annotations are written to provide clear descriptive explanations of content. Each entry is numbered sequentially and identified in the author and subject indexes by the entry number. the detailed indexes are designed to serve as the primary locating tools for this work.
