This volume aims to encourage primary and secondary teachers of English to engage in debates about key issues in subject teaching. It should stimulate those interested in education to reflect on the identity of the subject and its principles.

This book invites primary and secondary teachers of English to engage in debates about key issues in subject teaching. It is intended to stimulate student teachers, NQTs, language and literacy co-ordinators, classroom English teachers and aspiring or practising Heads of English, to reflect on the identity of the subject, the principles and policies, which, in the past, have determined, and now determine practice, and those that should influence future practice. Its editors do not claim coverage of all the issues that could be considered, but they do hope that readers will be encouraged by the book to develop or maintain the habit of mind that asks and attempts to answer important ‘why’ and ‘what if’ questions about subject teaching. Each chapter consequently concludes with some questions for discussion and suggestions for further reading.

Since it is anticipated that Issues in English Teaching will be used both by readers who will want to identify chapters that explore issues of particular concern to them, and by others who will want to pursue debates and issues through several chapters, this introduction offers both a summary of each chapter and an indication of how individual chapters contribute to the core debates that pervade the book. Readers should note that the book has been written, compiled and edited with a view to making the discussion that takes place in each chapter relevant to the policy and practice of both primary and secondary teachers of English. In some cases, the chapter authors have used examples and illustrations, which they relate explicitly to both primary and secondary practice; in others, the authors invite readers to consider the relevance of discussion to their practice in one or other phase.
