Excerpt

The impact of HIV and AIDS on communities all over the world is far from uniform. Most usually, those who are already marginalised and oppressed suffer most, demonstrating the capacity of the virus to exploit the fault lines of an already divided society. In Africa, where the impact of the epidemic has been particularly severe, women have found themselves not only especially vulnerable to infection, but required to shoulder the burden of responsibility for community education and care. This book offers a unique perspective on the challenges that women have faced individually, collectively and as members of community and non-governmental organisations. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in towns and villages in Zambia and Tanzania, it shows how historical and contextual analysis is essential if we are to understand the nature of their response. Using interviews and first hand accounts, it highlights the very real contribution that women make to prevention, education and care. Yet it demonstrates too how prevailing ideologies of masculinity and patriarchy seek to disorient this work, and pose challenges for any effective response. Certain to take its place among the better texts on AIDS and Africa, AIDS, Sexuality and Gender in Africa is essential reading for all those working in the fields of development, African studies and health.
