Rice: The Primary Commodity

Excerpt

I was asked if I would prepare a text on rice as a commodity in the contemporary world, whilst busy on a book on the history of the international rice trade. That work is not yet finished, but I have managed to seize the opportunity to put this study together in the midst of my other duties as Senior Lecturer in International Economic History at University College of Wales, Swansea. I have tried to write it in as straightforward a way as possible, and I hope it will be of interest to specialists and general readers. I should like to thank Douglas Waller and the late Alan Harper of the London Rice Brokers’ Association for their help and encouragement, although they are in no way responsible for any errors or views expressed here. I should also like to thank Morgan Perkins of the US Department of Agriculture for permission to use material from Grain: World Markets and Trade in my research. Thanks too to Chris Black of the Rice Growers’ Co-operative Ltd of New South Wales for assistance in respect to the Australian rice industry.
