Julian North is a Researcher in the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University. He has undertaken a wide variety of research on small firms. Recently he completed a research project on small businesses and their relations with trade associations and currently is investigating entrepreneurship and the older person. In 1995 and 1996 he co-authored papers which won the prize for best paper presented at the Institute of Small Business Affairs National Small Business Policy and Research Conference.

Robert A. Blackburn is Director of the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University. He is the Midland Bank Research Fellow in small business studies at the centre and has published widely on aspects of the small business. A recent project, sponsored by the Management Charter Initiative and the Department of Education and Employment, has been on business support networks in Denmark, Baden Wurttemberg and the UK. He is also responsible for several other projects being undertaken by the centre.

James Curran is Emeritus Professor of Small Business Studies at Kingston University. He established the University’s Small Business Research Centre in 1987 and was Midland Bank Professor of Small Business Studies and Director of the centre until 1996. He continues to be associated with the centre and its research. He has a long record of research and publications on the small firm and is widely known in the UK and internationally. He is currently directing a study of small business owner involvement in the community and researching the possible impact of a statutory national minimum wage on UK small firms.
