Excerpt

The present volume contains the second half of the Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius, namely, Books 6 through 10, beginning with the persecution under Severus through the final victory of Constantine over Licinius. Book 10 is taken up largely with a discourse delivered by Eusebius in the church at Tyre and addressed to its bishop, Paulinus. This is very definitely a digression to a story which up to this point, almost the very end, has followed a carefully laid out plan. It is, however, interesting as a sample of the ecclesiastical oratory of that time in the East, being very flowery and turgid, quite characteristic of the rhetoric of this region.
