Excerpt

Chris Bryant thanks the Economic and Social Research Council, and Dr George Kolankiewicz, the Co-ordinator of the East-West II Initiative, for a grant which, inter alia, funded his participation in the ‘Democracy in Context’ research seminars from December 1991 to April 1993—a programme in which Edmund Mokrzycki also took part. Seminars in Warsaw, Rotterdam, Salford and Prague enabled the editors to meet and spared them the travails of having to confer entirely by post and fax. In addition, papers presented at, and work done for, each of the four seminars have indirectly informed the content of this volume.

Edmund Mokrzycki thanks the British Academy for funding a visit to England in September 1991 which included an editorial meeting in Salford; and the European University Institute, Florence, for the 1992-93 Jean Monnet Fellowship which enabled him to benefit from its support and its facilities during the most intensive period of editing.

Both editors thank Paul Piccone for permission to publish a revised and extended version of an article by Zygmunt Bauman which first appeared in Telos, no. 92, summer 1992.
