At a time when booted warriors are trampling under foot all that civilized men hold sacred and the anchors of faith are dragging in the storm, the Hebrew prophets speak a commanding word. They speak of God and conscience, they denounce the vested evils, excoriate the mighty and the powerful, repudiate the immoral religions, and plead for justice, mercy and humility as the will of God in the affairs of men. They stretch far horizons before those who have eyes to see; they speak of a new heaven and a new earth to those who have the imagination to perceive. In an age when nations are snarling at each other across every frontier, when races are at each other's throats, and classes are in conflict, the nobility of mind and majesty of speech of the Hebrew prophets breathe healing and strength.

The present author has sought to delineate the personalities of the prophets against the backgrounds of their times. Historic summaries are given in bold outline. To capture the authentic spirit of the prophets he has resorted to generous quotations from Bible text. Thus each prophet speaks his own message in his own words against the events of his day.
