This book is one kind of invitation to learning. It is about the ways in which extremism operates among us to accomplish its peculiar purposes. Because we have in our three books on Communism dealt at length with the tactics of Marxism‐ Leninism, our major stress here is upon those of the Radical Right. But the similarities and the competition between the two extremes—each of them wanting to reshape our common ways of looking at things, in order to gain power enough to reshape our society—make up a significant part of our theme.

There is one fortunate thing about the writings and the methods of the far Left and the far Right. While they can catch us off guard and do tremendous harm so long as we do not familiarize ourselves with their character, they are far more stereotyped and repetitive than are those of the general run of Americans. Hence, they can be taken apart, as it were, and studied, to see what makes them function.
