Excerpt

It is important that developing countries create their own scientific and technological capacities so that each can determine its own socioeconomic and cultural path.

— Technology, Growth and Employment Economic Summit Meeting of 1982 (United Nations)

This book seeks to capture in one volume the essence of what we have been doing in Science and Technology over the years. It seeks to bring to the Jamaican public and to the international community outstanding scientific achievements that are not commonly known. Its publication could be described as timely as it fits in with the efforts being made to build on the S&T institutional infrastructure, science education and the overall efforts being made to improve the quality of life of Jamaicans.

Our economic future will strongly depend on the investment that we make in S&T as it stretches across all aspects of our endeavours. A simple recognition of this fact and the use of S&T approaches in all our undertakings will improve the country's economic and social well-being through innovation, creativity, the building of endogenous capacity, development of new and improved services and goods for domestic consumption and exports.

The information documented herein has clearly illustrated how new industries have been created based on biological and mineral resources and the application of S&T in making use of these resources for economic purposes. There is an abundance of opportunities for creating new industries in the future.
