When I was asked to write a Life of William Caxton for the Roadmaker Series, it seemed to me to offer an opportunity for dealing with the subject from an entirely new standpoint.

The most exhaustive of modern biographies of England's first printer is that of William Blades, and it touches every side of his character and work, and will always remain the standard authority on all that relates to Caxton. At the same time a very large part of Blades' work is purely technical, consisting of a survey of the art of printing, its history and its methods, as well as of particular descriptions of the various founts of type used by Caxton between 1474 and his death in 1491.
