Black Family (Dys)Function in Novels by Jessie Fauset, Nella Larsen, & Fannie Hurst

Calloway (English, The Citadel) explores various aspects of the class formation and acculturation within the black community through the fictional representation of maternity and domestic spaces. Fauset and Larson, she finds, deal with the tension between aspirations and social restrictions among upwardly aspiring blacks, while Hurst portrays a woman who submits without protest to racial oppression. The study is developed from her doctoral dissertation for the University of Michigan. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
