Forty-eight essential papers on the Arab-Israeli conflict issued over the past century by official and quasi-official governments and organizations--parties to the dispute--are accompanied by introductions which place these landmark works in their historical context. Many entries have epilogues that detail the results or reaction to the particular paper. The collection provides the documentary background for political Zionism, illustrates Great Britain's role, and establishes the U.S. as a major player. No document has been paraphrased or truncated and no relevant information has been omitted.

During the nearly quarter of a century that I have been teaching a course on the Arab-Israeli conflict on a regular basis I have had my students read a major portion of the relevant documents so that they might gain a greater understanding of the subject. Although some of these documents have been more or less readily available either in the text or in supplementary readers, others I have had to have duplicated for them. It was as an outgrowth of this practice that I decided to prepare a collection of the most important of these documents, originally for my students and then to meet the request of others who are no longer students. When I decided to publish this collection I was encouraged by some of those previous students to prepare relatively short introductions so as to place each document in its historical context. As with the documents themselves, I decided to return once again to the primary sources in the preparation of these introductions. The result has been that the historical notes are, themselves, based primarily upon other documents, published memoirs of the participants, printed and unprinted letters, international reporting services, and other “raw” materials, and, in one instance, personal correspondence with a onetime congressman. In addition to the introductions many of the documents have been provided with epilogues so as to provide the reader with detailed information regarding the results or reaction to that particular document.
