Excerpt

For several generations, and certainly since the middle of the nineteenth century, Scotland and Wales have maintained a strong link through the interaction of their ministers of religion and academics. An opportunity arose during 1999 for the Centre for the Advanced Study of Religion in Wales to enhance this relationship further by helping to arrange a conference and enable a dialogue to occur between representatives of the two nations. The invitation to participate and to contribute was accepted without hesitation.

The main topic of conversation in both countries at that time was the question of devolution, and it was seen that discussion of the issue, more often than not, led to a need within each of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom to rethink the nature and manifold expressions of national identity. It was therefore decided that this theme should be investigated in its historical context, and the conference held at New College, Edinburgh, enabled the participants to engage not only in individual studies but also in comparative assessments of the subject.

This collection of papers is therefore considered a valuable addition to the Bangor History of Religion series as it contributes to our understanding of the past and thereby of the present. In looking over our national boundaries we are enriched by the experiences of others, while at the same time enabled to share our understanding of ourselves and of the world in which we live.
