Excerpt

Every collection is the result of a combined and steady effort, engaging many individuals and institutions. This book is no exception. Indeed, as one would expect of a reader on urban social movements in a global environment, the organisation of the book is closely tied to an active global network. The book is also the result of a rich collegial and intellectual fermentation that has been developed and nurtured under the rubric of Research Committee (RC) 47-Social Movements and Social Classes-of the International Sociological Association (ISA).

Most of the chapters in this volume first appeared in RC 47's many conferences, particularly in Santa Cruz, California and Montreal, Canada. The topics addressed herein underscore the rich variety of issues which currently animate discussions within RC 47 across the globe. We are indebted to the Executive Council of the RC, its current President, Professor François Dubet of France and former RC President, Louis Maheu of Canada.

The production of a truly global volume such as this, however, always has its local challenges in terms of a timely production calendar. We are particularly indebted to France Lamontagne in Montreal who courageously typed bibliographies, organised the texts and made this book ready for publication.
