Street Theatre and Other Outdoor Performance

Street Theatre and Other Outdoor Performance

Synopsis

This book is a description, a celebration and an analysis of outdoor theatre, which demonstrates just what a sophisticated art form it is. It provides a practical guide to those who are new to the subject and enables practising performers to additional new insight on their own work. It also provides arts administrators and festival organisers with the information they need to programme outdoor performances successfully. Bim Mason describes some of the less well known methods as well as examining the performance practices of some of the most established British and European companies. He shows how the contemporary scene has been arrived at, and explores the ways in which outdoor performance continues to challenge and dissolve our definitions of theatre.

Excerpt

This book started life when I received a bursary from the Arts Council of Great Britain to research into street theatre in the spring of 1989. the requested report grew, as whole new aspects began to open up, until it was suggested to me that I develop it into a full-length book. It has provided me with an opportunity to reflect upon the experiences of the last fourteen years and to widen my knowledge in other areas. in trying to stand apart from my own tastes and preferences I have learnt a great deal. I hope that other performers and directors, along with promoters, students and teachers, will share my enthusiasm for this most exciting area of theatre.
