Most of the literature available for students to draw upon when researching and writing their undergraduate dissertation in politics has not been written with them in mind. For example, most of the texts available have been written from a sociological or psychological perspective. The end result of this is often confusion on the part of the student, who is inevitably faced with examples that are not of relevance and extended commentary on methods that are unlikely to prove of practical use in their own dissertation research. Moreover, many of the texts available address the needs of postgraduate as opposed to undergraduate students, yet the requirements of the undergraduate and the postgraduate dissertation are clearly not one and the same.

It is for these reasons that this book was written, to try to redress the balance in favour of the undergraduate student of politics. The book is compact and consequently cannot cover everything.
