Excerpt

Amidst the fragmentation that currently characterizes the field of developmental psychology, the life work of Ina Č.Užgiris is a model of integration filled with innumerable theoretical insights yet to be explored. This book was originally intended to honor Ina on the occasion of her sixtieth birthday but sadly she died before it was completed. Its chapters were written by Ina's students and colleagues, and they are all meant to honor and extend her contributions to developmental psychology In honoring Ina Užgiris it is fitting that the chapters cover a wide range of theoretical and empirical issues. At the same time, the concept of interaction, which she emphasized in her own work, provides an integrative framework for understanding the complexities of developmental processes and trajectories. We were fortunate to have interacted directly with Ina, and to us she remains an enduring example of integrity and intellectual dedication. It is our hope that the ideas presented in this book will challenge others to take up where she left off. And so it is with respect, gratitude, and affection that we dedicate this book to the memory of Ina Č.Užgiris.
