Excerpt

We have developed this primer of relational and family therapy supervision to offer resources for the new generation of clinical educators and supervisors of marital and family therapists. There are other books on family therapy supervision that have been written over the past decade, but we believe this work will reflect the historical evolution of the field to its present focus on integrative clinical work in a variety of challenging clinical settings. Most family therapy practitioners today no longer follow singular models of intervention as did their mentors of one or two generations ago. the developments of the field and applications of family therapy to the full range of clinical disorders, as well as the mandates of managed health care, have changed forever the roles and expectations of couple and family therapists.

Our focus will be on a personally developed integrative model of supervision. We expect that this book can be used as a text for graduate courses in family therapy supervision as well as by supervisors in either academic or private training settings. We also have organized this in a sort of "workbook" format to offer practical steps and guidelines for Approved Supervisor Candidates of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). a goal would be that when they have completed work in this book they would have reflected on and acquired, with the aid of their supervisory mentor, the basic ingredients and work products necessary to complete their application for that credential.

We have been teaching and supervising marital and family therapists for over three decades. We have done this in private practice and agency settings, graduate programs, and workshops and institutes. in all of our work we have followed the requirements of the aamft. Over the years, we have found that our teaching and training approaches have evolved in response to the changing practice of marital and family therapy-its professionals, its theories, and its settings.
