Rethinking Anti-Racisms: From Theory to Practice

Synopsis

This collection seeks to rethink anti-racism both in light of social changes, and also of new theoretical debates about citizenship, multiculturalism, hybridity, diaspora and social movements. As well as chapters on theoretical interventions, Rethinking Anti-Racisms has substantive chapters covering issues such as: * anti-deportation campaigns * anti-fascism * education * the Southall Black Sisters * the contradictory use of ethnicity as a way of tackling racism.

Excerpt

This book is a product of discussions we have had over a long period and particularly over the last decade. An important landmark in these discussions was the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence, a black school student, on 22 April 1993, in Eltham in south-east London. Following this horrendous crime, there were major mobilisations for a full inquiry into racist police methods and against the presence of the fascist British Movement's headquarters in south-east London. in September of that year we organised a European conference at the University of Greenwich (10-11 September 1993) in order to begin to understand the new dynamics of racism. Since then our own professional trajectories have informed the interests we address in the present volume. These reflect the growing interest in the global dynamics of racism and anti-racism, and new ways of thinking which move beyond race-conscious policies, on the one hand, and identity politics on the other. We hope that the book will help to further develop theories and practices that challenge binary and essentialised categories, and encourage politics and policies that can more effectively attack the dehumanisation of racisms and other forms of social degradation, inferiorisation, violence and inequality.
