Synopsis

Having the ability to present confidently, engage the audience, make a clear, well-argued case and handle tricky situations is rarely a natural talent; but it can be learnt through practice and application. This book helps readers do just that.

Excerpt

Most scientists and technical workers find their work fascinating and exciting. If you engage such a person in a one-on-one conversation you can often get a strong sense of this excitement. Yet in formal speaking situations the enthusiasm is often suppressed in favor of a deadly serious recitation of dry facts. Some people are simply not trained to handle public speaking situations. Others fear that too much enthusiasm might call their scientific objectivity into question. This book aims to help you present your technical information in clear, credible language and to convey the passion you feel for your subject.

We have been fortunate in recent years to learn from the students who have enthusiastically participated in our “Technical Presentations” course. They offered much constructive feedback on draft versions of this book. In particular, we wish to thank Dr Leyla Akman, Dr Roopa Bhat, Dr Jonathan Boomer, Dr Lihong D'Angelo, Dr Zhihong Deng, Yan Dong, Amy Dressel, Laura Dvorak, Laura Eriks, Mark Fons, Dr Alison Hinds, Dr Steve Kantor, Yoon Sang Kim, Nandan Lad, Steven Latshaw, Dr Gerald Lee, Qiuping Li, Dr Lana Louie, Chunlong Ma, Dr Art Mandelin, Siu Ng, Dr Tao Nguyen, Dr Evangelos Ntrivalas, Dr Fikret Sahin, Dr Zhilin Song, Dr Christy Stine, David Tampa, Dr Yongjun Tan, Tara Teppen, Dr Reha Toydemir, Houman Vaghefi, Mina Wang, Dr Xiaojun Wang, Huaqiang Wen, Kefang Xie, and Daesong Yim. We would also like to thank Anne Wilson, Dr Howard Kanare, Dr David Jacobs, and Dr Frank Kotsonis for their encouragement in this project, and especially Deb Pauley for her careful reading of the entire manuscript.
