British Elections & Parties Review

Containing contributions from leading names in British politics, this review continues to publish front-rank research on parties, elections and voting behaviour in Britain.

This is the thirteenth annual volume published under the auspices of the Elections, Public Opinion and Parties (EPOP) specialist group of the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom. epop continues to thrive as a psa specialist group and the success of these volumes reflects its vigour.

The articles in this volume were originally presented at EPOP's annual conference hosted by the University of Salford in September 2002. a total of nearly 40 papers were offered, reflecting the diversity and high quality of the research being done in the fields of political science covered by EPOP's remit. As in all previous volumes of the Review, the articles included here have been independently refereed and extensively revised before publication. We are grateful to all the authors for the timely way in which they responded to referee comments and produced revised versions of their papers.

A highlight of the 2002 conference was the presence of an unprecedentedly large number of overseas guests. Several of their contributions are included in this Review. They were able to attend thanks to generous financial support for the conference from the Economic and Social Research Council; the esrc Research Programmes on Democracy and Participation (Director, Paul Whiteley), Devolution and Constitutional Reform (Director, Charlie Jeffery), and Future Governance (Director, Ed Page); the Arthur McDougall Trust; and the psa.

We are grateful to the University of Salford and to the local organiser, Jon Tonge, for ensuring that the conference ran so smoothly. Once again it is also a pleasure to thank Cathy Jennings of Frank Cass for the interest she takes in the Review and for the constructive guidance she provides to the editors.
