Readers will realize, only a short way into Roger Soder's Preface, that his book is not an angel food cake recipe for effective leadership. Business executives should expect no lists of things to do in order to keep clients from leaving by the back door while they are ushering new ones through the front. School principals will look in vain for five easy steps to good relationships with parents. Nevertheless, this is an eminently practical book, a handbook for survival as well as excellence in leadership and sleeping with a clear conscience.

Leadership ranks almost with politics and religion as a topic of human interest and conversation. A steady stream of announcements of seminars, new books, and speakers coming to town is directed particularly to the business and educational communities. The common appeal is to individual potential and accompanying financial rewards, power, and prestige. The language of persuasion frequently verges on the spiritual or psychoanalytic. Little is said of the common good. Soder's approach is quite different.

Roger Soder is not, of course, a lone explorer of the high ground of moral leadership. Nor is he naive in assuming that moral purpose provides the leader with a shield against reproach or attack.
