The idea for this book is not in itself new. The original idea was to write a second edition of a now out of press book which was based on similar principles. However, as time passed it became much clearer what our students needed, the ideas about the book matured, and changed. We realised that we wanted a text which not only covered a large range of methods (both physical and social science), but also one which could act as a reference source. We wanted the methods to be directly usable, but without the assumption of a lifetime's experience of analytical chemistry or surveying. We also wanted a book which did this in a more direct style than was usual in books of this kind.

Then one day it just happened. We found the right set of authors and a publisher who shared our views. A year down the line we have a book which is different again from that planned. There is a chapter on the atmosphere which never saw the light of day. On the other hand, there are other sections on the basic things about being a scientist, and how to use equipment, which have evolved into important characteristics of the book.

The book opens with a practical commentary on some of the characteristics of scientists, and this theme is continued in the second chapter on sampling. The third chapter is also cognate providing students with not only the necessary statistical tools, but also sharing our experience
