Synopsis

Based on extensive research by the contributors and other scholars, this comparative study examines the past, present and future of management in the transitional economies of East and Central Europe, Russia, the People's Republic of China, and Vietnam. It discusses the nature of the transition process, identifying different transition paths, highlighting common features and outlining useful theoretical approaches. Each chapter covers a wide range of aspects of management in the countries covered, including details of the historical and cultural background, the transition process, and both external and internal factors, and the macro and micro situation.nbsp; Its multidisciplinary approach, makesnbsp;this book suitable for both a practitioner and an academic readership

Excerpt

How management in transitional economies has been affected by the momentous changes that have taken place since the late 1980s is a subject of great importance. This book represents an international collaboration between management scholars in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia-Pacific. The five co-authors of this work, expert in one or more parts of the world studied, worked on the manuscript for over two years. The work covers historical background, general trends as well as specific research-based data collected in the course of their individual research activities over recent years. We deal with both the macro- and micro-economic levels of analysis, as well as the cultural, managerial, political and social influences involved. The work is thus essentially interdisciplinary in nature and we hope it will have a wider appeal for this reason.

The countries covered in this book stretch from the now happily fallen Berlin Wall to the Great Wall of China. They cover a range of countries from the former socialist and command economies of Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, the People's Republic of China, and ending with Vietnam. We are indebted to many colleagues too numerous to mention in those lands who have over the years been both friends and colleagues.

We would also like to thank the University of Ljubljana which provided the back-up for a Working Seminar at Bled, essential for the completion of the final drafts of the book. We should like to acknowledge the assistance of several people who helped make this work possible, including Jenny Edwards whose help was invaluable in the preparation of the manuscript, Pia Jönsson of London Metropolitan University for illustrating Figure 1.1, Adnan Mujagić of Buckinghamshire Business School for extensive data collection, our commissioning editor, Peter Sowden, at RoutledgeCurzon and many others.
