Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe: The Russian, Czech and Slovak Fiction of the Changes, 1988-1998

Synopsis

This is a consideration of Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction in the late communist and early post-communist periods. The text focuses on the most innovative trend to emerge in this period, on those writers who, during & after the collapse of communism, characterised themselves as 'liberators' of literature.

Excerpt

Throughout this study, Russian is transcribed from the Cyrillic according to the Library of Congress transliteration system without diacritics, with the exception of certain well-known proper names where a particular spelling in English has become the norm (e.g. Dostoevsky). The study contains several references to critics who have published both in Russian and in English translation, where the transliteration of their name differs from that used here. In such cases, for clarity I have retained the Library of Congress transliterated form of the name throughout, but given the name as published in English in square brackets in the bibliography (e.g. Lipovetskii [Lipovetsky]).

Given the peculiar publishing circumstances of the period, where relevant the first reference to a work is followed by the dates of first publication abroad and at home (excluding any samizdat editions), which is often, in the Russian case, a journal publication. I have also included the stated date of writing where this differs significantly from the date of publication. The titles of classic works of Russian literature are given in their best-known English form only.

All translations are my own. References to English translations of works, where available, are included in the bibliography.
