Excerpt

This book contains a selection of papers prepared for and presented at the 13th biennial Conference of the International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS) held in Manchester in July 1994. IAPS conferences have varied in their scope and in their linguistic framework as well as in the form in which their proceedings have been published. In this case it was agreed that the conference should have a clear theme, the Urban Experience and that papers should be accepted only on topics close to that theme. It was also decided that presentation could be in English or French, with a translation of summaries only into the other language. A final, important, choice was to publish those full papers which passed a review process similar to that used for scientific journals in this book of proceedings which would be available when the conference opened. Summaries of all papers to be presented at the conference were made available to delegates at the same time and also to the general public in a book of abstracts.

The conference programme was organised into three main parts, with a concentration on one part on each of the three days. This subdivision has been followed as far as possible in the organisation of the book, so readers will find the first part deals with Participation and Urban Design, the second with User Needs and Evaluation, the third with Environmental Education and Urban Theory. Within this framework, paper presentation sessions, symposia and workshops were given section titles indicating their general academic content and these have been repeated here. The chapters of the book were then allocated to the sections under which they were presented as papers in the conference. Thus if three papers in one section were selected for inclusion they
