Often what we are searching for is right before our eyes but, unaware, we go out looking for it anyway. For me, trying to find a yoga teacher who could teach me how to use the practice to better handle life was like that.

The search began on my first visit to India. I met a man in New Delhi who so closely resembled the image of the great yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar emblazoned on the cover of Light on Yoga weighing down my backpack that I instantly liked him. Invited to stroll around Connaught Place I willingly agreed and promptly followed him straight into a deserted railway yard. `Trust me,' he purred, `don't buy into fear.' When he suggested we `meditate' in the quiet of an empty carriage I turned on my heels and ran. (Other than in looks, he was not related to the great yoga master from Pune.)

From Calcutta, across the northern plains, to Varanasi, through the foothills of the Himalayas and all around Rajasthan . . .
