An author is usually the person least fitted to introduce his own book. Exceptions serve to confirm the rule. Inside Germany is an exception.

Inside Germany attempts to convey a picture of the last forty years of Germany, with special emphasis on the fourteen years of the democratic republic and the subsequent Nazi dictatorship. Many books have been published on post-war Germany, but I choose to believe that my book will prove helpful in explaining many events and factors that are little known and less understood abroad.

My personal life and career are inextricably bound up with the last half-century of German development. I have endeavored to be as objective as possible in my description of the events leading up to and following Hitler's "national revolution." It has been difficult at times.

Whether the American public realizes what the German people, and with them the whole civilized world, lost in the death of the German democratic republic, I cannot say. Many voices belittling German democracy and the German post-war republic have been heard in these years. I am loath to believe that these critics have grasped the real meaning of post-war events and the aims of the German people after the war. My book intends to strike a blow at the Germany of today and its creed of brutal force. It intends to speak for social democracy, for justice and for humanity. It aims to strengthen those forces that are committed to the propositions of peace, progress and the pursuit of happiness. If that is treason and propaganda, make the most of it.
