Excerpt

This study of the life and works of Judith Sargent Murray was compiled as a thesis for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Maine. Information regarding the subject is meager, owing to the author's obscurity and to the fact that many of the manuscripts were destroyed by mildew, after having been stored in an old house on the Bingamon plantation, near Natchez, Mississippi. Since Mrs. Murray published only one collection of her works, The Gleaner, the rest, consisting of essays and poems, is scattered through the various periodicals and magazines of her day.

In my search for information regarding Mrs. Murray's activities, I visited the New England Historic Genealogical Society Library, the Boston Athenaeum, and Harvard College Library, and made frequent use of books borrowed from the Tufts College Library. I also enjoyed an interesting afternoon exploring the old records and roaming through the rooms of the Sargent- Murray-Gilman House at Gloucester, for many years the home of Judith and John Murray.

In the work of finding and arranging my material, I have received unceasing aid and encouragement from Dr. Milton Ellis, of the University of Maine. Others to whom I am especially indebted are Miss Ethel Hayes, Librarian of Tufts College, for her generosity in lending me many books; Mrs. Emma Sargent, of Haverford, Pennsylvania, compiler of the Sargent Genealogy, for her unfailing courtesy in answering my inquiries; and the Reverend John Clarence Lee, who very kindly offered me the use of his private library while I was in Gloucester, and who has shown great interest in my work.
