Contemporary Composition Studies: A Guide to Theorists and Terms

Synopsis

Composition studies is a rapidly growing and constantly changing field. At present, however, graduate students and writing teachers have little choice of current reference works that define key terms in the field and provide information about the scholars and researchers who have shaped and are shaping the discipline. This volume provides alphabetically arranged entries for 108 scholars and 128 terms and concepts central to composition studies. The entries for individuals chronicle the history of their contributions to the field, while the entries for terms record term development over time. The book includes generous bibliographical information and an appendix of scholars from other disciplines who have contributed to composition studies.

Excerpt

This reference work is a result of our experiences as students in a graduate seminar on composition theory at Louisiana State University. At the time, one of us was a third-year graduate student in composition studies. The other, a writing teacher and administrator with twenty-five years' experience in the classroom, was trying to keep up with changes in the theoretical underpinnings of the discipline. Our experience in the class convinced us of the need for a reference work that would define key terms and concepts and provide information about scholars in the field. We intend this text as an invitation into composition studies for newcomers who wish to explore and perhaps contribute to the discipline, for those in other disciplines who wish to familiarize themselves with the field of composition studies, and for seasoned writing teachers who wish to review the field, possibly making new connections between theory and practice.

CONTENT

Taking the early 1960s as the beginning of composition studies, we introduce leading scholars and researchers, identify their areas of interest and expertise, and briefly review their major contributions. We also include brief entries for late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholars and teachers whose work has influenced our discipline. We define commonly used terms as they are understood by those in the field and, when appropriate, place them in the context of the field's development. In an appendix, we provide brief entries introducing scholars from other fields who have contributed significantly to composition . . .
