This book follows in an abbreviated form the text of The Musical Companion, published in London in November 1934. In the original work Book I, "The A B C of Music," was written by W. R. Anderson ; Book II, "Orchestra and Ochestration," was written by Julius Harrison; Book III, "Opera," was written by Edward J. Dent ; Book IV, "The Human Voice," was written by Francis Toye and Dyneley Hussey; Book V, "Chamber Music," was written by Edward Evans; and Book VI, "The Solo Instruments," was written by F. Bonavia.

Since the present work has been edited for the American public, none of these authors must be held responsible for the text as it appears in the following pages.

In the original edition there was a brief reference to American music. These few pages have been omitted, and in their place appears a chapter on Music in the United States, by Madame Olga Samaroff Stokowski .

In the original publication the glossary of musical terms, the work of Mr. W. R. Anderson, was included in Book I. It seemed more practical in the American edition to transfer Mr. Anderson's glossary to the concluding pages.

All the chapters in the London edition were edited by Mr. A. L. Bacharach.

With the exception of the chapter contributed by Madame Samaroff Stokowski, the American editor has added nothing to the original text. He has, however, omitted many phrases, sentences, and paragraphs, which amount in the end to many pages.

All references to events or to institutions which though well known in Great Britain are unfamiliar to the average American reader have been left out.

It seemed wise also to suppress many humorous passages and personal reminiscences, which although they give character to the London edition, delay the reader who is eager to get at the meat of the matter.
