This book, like any second edition, reflects a continuing belief in the importance of the topic. What is perhaps somewhat unusual about this second edition is the fact that in the 13 years since the publication of the first edition, there has been a veritable explosion of innovative developments within the field of cognitive-behavioral therapies. This book is an effort to reflect that growth, while being sensitive to the fact that there remains much to do. As I noted in the preface to the first edition, at that time there really was no comprehensive book, written by the best experts in the field, that covered the broad domain of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Since then, a number of authored and edited books have undertaken this task, with varying degrees of success. The completion of this book obviously reflects the publisher's and my own belief that it fills an important place in the books on the topic.

An attempt is made in this volume to approach the cognitive-behavioral therapies from a theoretical perspective. The chapter topics were specifically chosen to sample the different approaches to cognitive-behavioral therapy, rather than to provide a technological or practice-oriented text. The intended audience is one that is learning about the field of psychotherapy and wishes to explore the growth of the various cognitive-behavioral models. In our adoption of this approach to the field, several issues have emerged that warrant some discussion here.

Many of the works that deal with cognitive-behavioral therapy use various disorders or clinical problems as the organizing framework for the exposition of the treatment. Such an approach is particularly useful for readers who want to learn how to deal with various clinical syndromes.
