Excerpt

Part I of this book is an overview of literature on eating disorders. In chapters 1, 2, and 3, we succinctly review the literature on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, and in chapter 4, the literature on eating disorders not otherwise specified. This material will be of most utility to those practitioners who have come to the field of eating disorders recently. Clinicians who are experienced in working with this patient population will probably already know much of this work, although some of the more recent findings summarized may be of interest.

In considering this literature it is important to remember that many patients being seen in clinics—in some series the majority of patients— do not meet formal criteria for an eating disorder and are so-called subthreshold or atypical cases and are classified as eating disorders not otherwise specified. Therefore, these patients should not be thought of as simply a “fringe” group of atypical patients but as a group that encompasses a variety of eating disorder problems. Whether any of these groupings will be given individual diagnoses remains unclear, but it is reasonable to assume that this might eventually be the case.

In reading this literature the reader is encouraged to remember that this material is in a distilled form. Those who are interested in a deeper understanding of these disorders are encouraged to read other texts that focus in greater detail on the individual illnesses discussed.
