Aphra Behn: The Incomparable Astrea

Excerpt

The following study of Aphra Behn does not pretend to be either detailed or exhaustive. All the available material has already been collected by the Rev. Montague Summers into his Memoir of Mrs. Behn, prefixed to his edition of her works, and I have therefore thought it unnecessary to crowd a very slight sketch with every scrap of information or reference. On the other hand, if I have gone at some length into the destructive arguments advanced by Dr. Bernbaum, it is because Father Summers in his Memoir has allotted only a brief footnote to Dr. Bernbaum's two pamphlets, and also because I have had the advantage of studying several articles in a Dutch magazine, which have appeared since Father Summers' Memoir was written.

My warmest thanks are due to Father Summers . . .
