Excerpt

The purpose of this book is to provide concise information about the rulers of Mexico from 1325 to 1997. Addressed to the nonspecialist reader and the intermediate level student of Mexican history, the book is organized for easy consultation.

Presented in chronological order, there is data on 185 rulers: tlatoanis, caciques, captain generals, governors, viceroys, judges in residence, members of the audiencia, oidores, leaders, military and civil dictators, emperors, military chiefs, supreme commanders, regents and representatives of power, chiefs and leaders of the revolution, and presidents (appointed in name only, interim, and constitutionally elected).

The book is organized into four basic chapters that deal with four periods in history. It includes the names of those who governed the nation, regardless of how they reached power. Some did so through popular elections, but others seized power by force. Some governed only in name, and for some their mandates lasted for only a few minutes. Also mentioned are rebel leaders Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa because, even though they never reached the top of the political ladder, they did exercise considerable influence in Mexican politics for some time.

Each entry opens with specific information regarding the ruler's position and term, as well as biographical data regarding places of birth and death, followed by the name of a wife and parents, if known. General historic information follows regarding the ruler's life and position of power, as well as details of his triumphs and defeats. Any names and/or terms cited in the dictionary that are not followed by a parenthetical explanation can easily . . .
