As the children enter my classroom the first week of school, I greet them as they come through the door: [Come on in, friend.] When I gather them together in the meeting area, I say to the whole class, [Welcome, friends!] Later, when I explain daily jobs to the students, I tell them that they will all have a chance to be [friends and helpers.] By the second week of school, I hear the children referring to each other in this way, saying things such as, [When friends are talking, we should listen,] or [We should give friends kisses on owies to make them feel safe.] Sometimes visitors to the classroom are surprised that I refer to the children as [friends]
