Excerpt

One of my fondest memories is of lazy summer days long ago, when I would ride horses with my sister to a far comer of the family farm, hitch our horses to a tree, and sit in an abandoned stone cabin to read through the sunny afternoon. I grew up on a dairy and grain farm in the heartland of the United States—Iowa. There were few books in my family's home and no public libraries nearby (and few schools had any sort of library). But those books that were available to us were well read. By the time I was a teen, the family copies of Grimm's fairy tales and the tales of Hans Christian Andersen were well worn and tattered from use.

My abiding love of story deepened when my husband Jack and I read countless bedtime stories aloud to our six children. Now it is my grandchildren who help me enjoy even more stories and books.

It is in the spirit of encouraging curiosity and interest in books and reading that I offer these profiles of authors and illustrators with whom others might make literacy connections. I hope these profiles and comments engender curiosity, learning, and an appreciation of literature and contribute to the emergence of a community of literacy everywhere this book is read.
