This little book has grown out of lectures which, following my book The Spirit of Life (1991, et 1991) I have given in congregations and at clergy conferences, and to seminars and faculties in many countries. I have tried to say here as directly and immediately as possible what was put forward in my earlier book in the terminology of academic theology. What cannot be said simply does not need to be said at all. I have therefore largely dispensed with citations and references. These may be found in The Spirit of Life. But at the end of the present book I have offered some suggestions for further reading. Large-scale theological books have become expensive, at least in Germany. But theology is a task laid on every Christian. I believe in a general theology of all believers, corresponding to their general priesthood. That is the other reason why I am publishing this little book.

I should like to draw attention to some chapters which are new over against The Spirit of Life.

I ‘Wrestling with God. a Personal Meditation on Jacob’s Struggle at the Brook Jabbok following Genesis 32.25–32.’ I gave this on 13 August 1995 in the Bonhoeffer Church, Forest Hill, London, in remembrance of the theological school behind barbed wire at Norton Camp, 1945–1948. It was there that I came to theology.
