Chinese societies across Asia — in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, and elsewhere — are undergoing a fundamental transition. All are struggling with a socialization process that has emphasized support for traditional Confucian and folk principals and values, while daily being confronted by modern Western ideologies that stress existentialism, individuality, and competition.

Traditional values continue to underline the importance of marriage and childbearing in meeting filial obligations. As such, marriage continues to be seen as involving a lifelong commitment. Chinese women, it is thought, should only marry once, and are expected to remain unmarried on the death of a spouse. By the same token, such women should consider divorce an unacceptable option. in contravening these norms, those who elect to get divorced face an uncertain future, including a loss of social identity, and exposure to processes of social degradation and social discrimination. Such women may be rejected by their families, lose their circle of friends, and even have difficulty finding work and/or a place to live.

In the past, these social costs ensured that the rate of divorce remained extremely small. That is no longer true. the fact is that over 12,000 divorces per year are now recorded in Hong Kong alone. This new reality reflects the confluence of several factors, including competing pressures of work and family life, growing acceptance of Western ideas . . .
