Excerpt

Integrating Art and Language Arts through Children's Literature is a resource book that takes a variety of children's literature and provides classroom teachers with creative lessons. The lessons can be adjusted to meet the needs of any elementary class.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section describes art techniques that can be adapted to favorite children's books. There are so many books suitable for use in the classroom that it would be impossible to provide a lesson for every book. Many books can be easily adapted to these art techniques.

The second section lists more than 140 different books with lessons, covering a range of topics. The books are organized alphabetically by title. Most of the books have been published in the past 10 years and are available in bookstores and online. Some of the lessons explore the technique the artist used when creating the illustrations, and some of the lessons deal with the book's theme or a single subject in the book. Every lesson is a link to language arts because a children's book is the source. Many of the lessons also provide a specific language arts lesson that goes along with the art lesson. For example, the handmade book lessons provide instructions for making the handmade book as well as ideas to motivate writing.

A brief description about each book is provided, as well as a basic supply list and simple instructions. The book also provides Web links. Many of the authors have Web pages that provide facts about the author and information about additional books.
