Excerpt

During the past half century the abiding questions in gerontology have become even more compelling as contexts changed in the light of breakthroughs and emerging knowledge. Pressing issues are unlikely to go away; instead, they will continue to influence the emerging policy formulations, research agenda, and practice priorities. To illuminate the shadows and to cast attention on what is coming from just over the horizon, we invited some of the most creative thinkers currently contributing to the gerontological literature to reflect on their disciplines, to consider how key questions have emerged, how they have changed in the decades since gerontology entered the fray, and what may lie ahead. The resulting collection of essays provides a comprehensive perspective on the enduring questions in gerontology and how they have shaped our understanding of differences in the experience of old age.

The authors represented here consider which questions within each discipline comprising the field of gerontology will persist and elucidate the ways in which disciplinary approaches advance the field over time. As new initiatives are undertaken, new vistas have opened, raising more questions and prompting innovative approaches and solutions that reflect the disciplinary lens brought to the task at hand. By suggesting ways in which a discipline has influenced other disciplines, or benefited from the influence of other foci, the authors show how, in tandem, progress emerges when boundaries are pushed between what we know and what remains elusive. Lessons are both imported and exported, and progress in one area often leverages progress in another, creating the momentum that propels science and scholarship ahead. By juxtaposing broad disciplinary perspectives through the lenses of a cadre of innovative and forward-thinking gerontologists, Endunng Questions prepares readers to sift the details as well as to make their own contributions to the knowledge base necessary to affect the lives of the elderly. The impact of the contributions is to move beyond a [history of ideas] to incorporate events and developments unfolding outside the realm of narrowly focused scholarly . . .
