Twenty years after the 1980 volume of The Foreign Critical Reputation of F. Scott Fitzgerald: An Analysis and Annotated Bibliography (Stanley, 1980) was published (also by Greenwood Press) and well into a technological revolution in both communication and on-line resources, most of the countries of the world, in Europe as well as in Asia, do not yet have periodical indexes or bibliographies that reliably indicate the scholarly work that has been accomplished in a given year. Britain, Germany and, more recently, France, as it attempts to fulfill the promise of the new Bibliotheque Nationale de France, do have useful indexing systems, but Italy does not, despite efforts to update the Bibliografia sulla letteratura Americana. Further, the MLA International Index, the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, the Abstract of English Studies, and the Essay and General Literature Index do not include the same sources, nor do all indexes combined represent all the scholarly material written in a given year. The primary reason for the incompleteness of indexes or the lack of indexes at all is that much publishing abroad is conducted within each country's universities, and publications are not distributed throughout. The ultimate reason for the lack of indexes and the lack of scholarly distribution and is no doubt economic.

As with the compiling of the bibliography for the 1980 volume, I have had to make extensive personal contact with Fitzgerald scholars in all countries included here in order to compile a fairly comprehensive bibliography. This volume, then, will provide scholars in the countries included as well as interested scholars throughout the world with a significant representation of the present current scholarly work of Fitzgerald in several countries of Europe, Asia, and North America.

While the 1980 book represented the Fitzgerald scholarship from about 1925 to 1980 in Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan, this current volume on work on Fitzgerald abroad in the past two decades includes as well . . .
