Gifted Children is a lively and informative exploration of the gifted mind and the social and emotional needs of gifted children and their families.


I was extremely flattered to have been asked to write this foreword. I am not a professional educator or an academic. I'm a mother with a gifted child.

I can't tell you how much this book has meant to me. And how I wish someone at my daughter's first school had just mentioned the word 'gifted' to me.

Our daughter was nine years old when we were told she was gifted in language arts and maths. Why were we just learning this? Why hadn't anyone told us before? We had been told privately a couple of times by her teachers how she had scored highly on national exams for maths and English, but the words gifted, able or talented were never mentioned to us. We just thought, 'That's great. She's smart.' We loved going to parents' evenings!

It turns out that some schools believe it is best not to inform parents of their child's giftedness. Athletes receive repeated accolades at assemblies about their successes and artists' works are displayed around the school. But there is nothing comparable for children whose talents are academic. At our daughter's school, gifted children were praised at prize day on the last day of school – a ceremony to which only prize winners and their parents were invited.

Our daughter received an excellent education at her first school. Her teachers knew that she was gifted and she was challenged appropriately. This is crucial. If schools have to make special considerations for those with learning disabilities, then those who learn more quickly and want to delve into subjects more deeply should also be given the opportunity. But because our daughter's first school never suggested to us that she was gifted, we didn't realize when we moved back to the US that we should have been looking for a . . .
