A sentence is many things, and that's why it needs all seven definitions.

Definition

The seven definitions of a sentence are:

1. A sentence contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete
thought.

In the sentence Pepo hit the ball, the idea is complete because we know exactly what happened. Also the sentence is emphatic because of the arrangement of words: subject, verb, object.

Pepo—subject; Pepo is the doer.

Hit—verb (and part of the predicate); what Pepo did.

Ball—object (and part of the predicate); what was acted upon (receiver
of the action).

2. A sentence is a sequence of words that contains a subject and a pred
icate and conveys a complete thought.

The only real difference between this definition and the first one is the use of the word predicate rather than verb. A verb is a predicate, but a predicate can include a verb and any number of modifiers. In the sentence Pepo hit the ball, hit is the verb and part of the predicate.
