Excerpt

This book is intended for those professionals who are concerned with the management and treatment of medical and psychological disorders and the counselling of people with behavioural and emotional problems, and who wish to learn more about the applications of hypnosis to their work.

The contributors to this book are drawn from the professions of psychology, medicine and dentistry. They are all British and this reflects a recently growing trend for professional practitioners of therapeutic hypnosis in this country to publish their work in book form. The reader, however, will soon realize the indebtedness of those working in this area to the ideas and research findings of American authors, particularly in the field of experimental hypnosis.

The book assumes no prior knowledge of hypnosis on the reader's part, the first two chapters forming an introduction to the subject which will prepare the reader for the material to follow. However, detailed accounts of the history of hypnosis and the numerous theories of hypnosis have not been included; these topics are discussed in other recent publications which are mentioned in Chapter 1.

As editors, we would like to express our thanks to each contributor for his or her work in producing this volume, and to Mrs Valerie Heap and Mrs Vera Pratt for their assistance in preparing the final manuscript.
