Listening to the Word of God in a Winter of Discontent

Reading CREATION AND FALL makes one part of the audience of students to whom Dietrich Bonhoeffer lectured at the University of Berlin in the winter semester of 1932–33. Bonhoeffer, a Privatdozent“2” at the university, announced his course under the title Schöpfung und Sünde. Theologische Auslegung von Genesis 1–3 (Creation and sin. A theological exposition of Genesis 1–3). The course proved to be an immediate success among the students who crowded into his lecture room. It was a winter of profound discontent in Germany; it was also a time of confusion, anxiety, and, for many, false hope, as social and political upheavals led to the demise of the Weimar Republic and the birth of the Third Reich. In the midst of these events Bonhoeffer called his students to focus their attention on the word of God as the word of truth in a time of turmoil.

The students who attended the course responded by pressing Bonhoeffer to publish the lectures. He sent a typed copy of the manuscript he had written for the lectures to the well-known publishing house Chr. Kaiser Verlag. For publication, however, he had to change the original
