IDENTIFICATION: Memoirist, dramatist, and essayist known worldwide for his memoirs Angela's Ashes and Tis .

SIGNIFICANCE: When Frank McCourt's 1996 memoir Angela's Ashes , an account of growing up poor and Irish in Brooklyn and Limerick during the Great Depression, was published, it received immediate and enormous popular and critical acclaim. Later it won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for biography, as well as numerous other prestigious awards and citations. So great was the public's appetite for information about every detail of McCourt's childhood and for:. matters more generally related to Irish culture that Tis, the sequel to Angela's Ashes , became a success on a similar scale in 1999. McCourt's literary significance lies in his ability to offer simultaneously an eloquent, highly personal account of his life and a synthesis and critique of Ireland's narrative traditions.
